About Ian
Ian Burgess is a working artist born in Southport Merseyside in 1968.
As a child, he wanted to be an artist but his career adviser just laughed and said he could either be a mechanic or join the army. So he trained as a butcher then ran away to LA where he worked as a scenic painter. He returned to further education in the UK in his 20s and graduated from Guildhall University in London with a degree in Furniture Design and Technology.
After several years, working as a freelancer, Ian set up his own set building business: Setwo Ltd, designing and building sets for tv, film, and live, experiential and immersive events.
During this time, he continued to create his own art, working across different mediums, including oil and acrylic painting, dry point etching, paper embossing and clay. His work reflects the aesthetic that captivates his imagination in colour and texture with a fascination for lines and repetition.
He is delighted to have one of his BLOCK paintings in this year’s Summer Exhibition. It’s one of a series, each one consisting of a 13 x 13 grid, containing 13 specifically mixed colours, overlaid with polyurethane varnish, giving a cohesive hue.

I enjoy what sometimes seems to be the randomness of decision making and coordination between the mind and what your hands do, which can leave the marks that make the piece. I think this is captured in all my work - I love the simplicity of mark making.

London Clay
Ian has recently set up a pottery studio in South East London – londonclay.uk – running pottery classes and workshops. Alongside painting and printmaking, he is currently working on a series of ceramics, inspired by the Korean moon jar.
